Wyoming Veteran Home Repair and Adaptation Programs 2026

Wyoming runs no state veteran home repair program, but a property tax exemption just doubled to $6,000 of assessed value for qualifying veterans statewide.

Maximum benefit
$6,000

If you are a veteran in Wyoming planning repairs or accessibility work on your home, here is the direct answer: Wyoming does not run its own grant or loan program for veteran home repairs or modifications. The state's real value shows up on your property tax bill instead, through an exemption that just doubled in size. Here is how the federal grant money works, what Wyoming adds, and how to apply for both.

The four federal VA grants#

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers four grant and health-benefit programs nationwide, and Wyoming veterans qualify the same as veterans anywhere. Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) pays up to $126,526 in FY2026 for severe, permanent service-connected disabilities, such as loss of use of both legs or blindness rated 20/200 or worse. Special Home Adaptation (SHA) pays up to $25,350 in FY2026 for conditions like loss of use of both hands or certain respiratory injuries. Both are grants, not loans, so nothing is repaid. Apply with VA Form 26-4555; SAH or SHA can be used up to six times over your lifetime as funds remain.

Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA) helps if you are living temporarily in a family member's home. In FY2026 it pays up to $50,961 through the SAH path or $9,100 through the SHA path. TRA can only be used once, counts as one of your six lifetime uses, and draws down whichever grant total, SAH or SHA, you qualify under. Congress currently authorizes TRA through September 30, 2026.

Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) is a VA health benefit, not a housing grant, so you apply through the VA medical center's Prosthetics and Sensory Aids Service with VA Form 10-0103 and a provider's prescription. Service-connected veterans can receive up to $6,800 over their lifetime; other eligible veterans can receive up to $2,000. Renters can use HISA with the landlord's notarized permission. SAH and SHA construction runs through a contractor holding a VA Builder ID, a registration, not an approval rating.

What Wyoming adds#

Wyoming's own agency for veterans is the Wyoming Veterans Commission (WVC), part of the Wyoming Military Department, at wyomilitary.wyo.gov, 307-777-8152, with a statewide Wyoming Veterans Hotline at 1-800-833-5987. The WVC does not run a home repair, improvement, or adaptation grant or loan program. Its benefits are claims and pension assistance, the Military Assistance Trust Fund for hardship tied to military duty, tuition assistance, and records help. Wyoming's real contribution comes through a property tax exemption on your home.

Under Wyoming Statute 39-13-105, qualifying veterans can exempt $6,000 of assessed value from real or personal property tax on a primary residence. The 2024 Legislature doubled the exemption from $3,000 to $6,000 through Senate File 89, effective with tax year 2025. Some official pages still cite the old $3,000 figure, so confirm the current $6,000 amount with your county assessor.

To qualify, you need an honorable discharge and three years of Wyoming residency, longer than most states require. You also need wartime service in World War II, Korea, or Vietnam, or overseas service in an armed conflict with an expeditionary medal or equivalent. A compensable VA service-connected disability rating also qualifies. A surviving spouse keeps the exemption until remarriage. If you do not need the full exemption applied to your home, Wyoming lets you apply it to motor vehicle registration fees instead, an option not every state offers. Apply at your county assessor's office between January 1 and the fourth Monday in May, and you must re-contact the assessor every year to keep the exemption active.

How to apply in Wyoming#

Finding a provider who knows VA paperwork: Not every contractor has worked on SAH, SHA, or HISA projects. For the federal VA grants, WVC Veteran Service Officers, stationed in roughly ten regional offices across the state, help with federal and state benefits claims, including VA Form 26-4555. For the property tax exemption, file with your county assessor instead, not with the WVC. Start at wyomilitary.wyo.gov or call 307-777-8152 to find your nearest service officer.

How the programs stack together#

The federal VA grants pay for the actual construction, so start there, since that money never has to be repaid. Wyoming's exemption does not fund a project, but it can shrink your property tax bill every year, or reduce what you pay to register a vehicle if you choose that option instead.
